PROJECTS for CREATIVE USE OF OUR PRECIOUS RECYCLED WATER: Recycled Water Wheeling

Mike McGill has been working for over 10 years to recycle 100% of Central San's treated water. Currently, Central San is working with the Contra Costa Water District to provide recycled water to the refineries next to Central San, instead of discharging these millions of gallons of water into Suisan Bay. Contra Costa Water District will sell approximately 20 million gallons per day of Central San's recycled water to the refineries instead of delivering fresh water. This will free up fresh water for Contra Costa Water to make this water available to Santa Clara Water District which needs this water. This domino effect water exchange plan is called "wheeling." Instead of wasting 20 million gallons of water a day by discharging it into the Bay, Central San is working to make sure that water is reused by industry. Reuse of the water for industry does take a higher level of treatment. The recycled water must be denitrified and other processes so that it is suitable for industry's equipment. However, this is still a good value and great benefit for everyone involved. It reuses our limited supply of water, instead of discharging this nutrient rich water into the Bay waterways.
